Behind every accurate model and innovative solution is a team turning complex material behaviour into practical engineering insights. In this series of articles, we explore the important role Ex Mente’s Material Science team plays in helping us to Advance Through Insight. We will look at how their expertise strengthens our modelling capabilities and supports better decisions for our clients and the industry.
The pyrometallurgical industry has long been the cornerstone of global infrastructure, but we are currently facing two major challenges:
To meet this need for rapid innovation, as well as reduce the risks associated with scaling up emerging technologies, our industry has turned to computational modelling to simulate entire furnace processes. But an important aspect of these models often gets overlooked in the excitement of sophisticated simulation outputs: Ultimately, these models are only as accurate as its input parameters.
In high-temperature reactors, which often operate above 1500°C, process behaviour is governed by a complex interplay of physical and chemical properties. Physical properties, like viscosity, density, and thermal and electrical conductivity, are not merely static numbers in a database. They evolve dynamically with temperature and composition, directly dictating key physical phenomena like:
Despite this reliance, we face a substantial knowledge gap. Material property models are often scattered across literature or exist only as equations on paper. This knowledge gap is dangerous because even subtle deviations in property values can be amplified through a simulation, leading to significant discrepancies compared to actual reactor behaviour.
To ensure our next generation of smelting technologies works as intended, we must look beyond the glamour of our Multiphysics models, while also focusing on the material science that builds their foundation. By reducing uncertainty in material descriptions, we transform our computational models from approximations into realistic tools that can solidify the future of pyrometallurgy.
